SUMMARY:Farley Center - The Dine' and Uranium
DESCRIPTION:4/13/24 \nThe Dine’ and Uranium \nThe presenters\, Omie Baldwin and Cathy Middlecamp\, will tell not one but two stories\, as the title suggests. But these quickly converge\, because uranium ore was found on the land of the Dine’ in the Four Corners Area of the United States. Omie Baldwin will speak about the Navajo People’s cultural history\, where and how they lived\, past and present\, how they needed work\, and the mining facilities nearby in which they found work. Cathy Middlecamp will talk about three reasons why we took uranium out of the ground\, what happened when we did\, and some more general stuff about radioactivity and “radiation.” \nWho are these people and what are the stories of their land? What is uranium and what are the stories of uranium miners in the past? What new chapters in the story are being written today? We promise more questions than answers together with a lively romp through stories of our (slightly) radioactive planet. \nPlease RSVP to programs@farleycenter.org \nThis presentation is co-sponsored with Physicians for Social Responsibility (PSR) \nPresenter: Omie Baldwin \nOmie Baldwin is retired as the Student Service emerita in the University Counseling and consultation Service/University Health Services at UW-Madison. As a counselor and as an enrolled member of the Navajo Nation\, she and her colleague\, Cathy Middlecamp\, designed and taught the course “Uranium and American Indians. The first chemistry course\, to meet the campus wide ethnic studies requirement. She is past board member of the Farley Center\, She served a board member and board chair of the Farley Center for seven years. \nPresenter: Cathy Middlecamp \nCathy Middlecamp is professor emerita in the Nelson Institute for Environmental Studies and an affiliate of the Department of Chemistry. From 2015 to 2020\, she also served as the director for education and research at the Office of Sustainability. Her scholarship lies at the intersection of science\, people\, and the planet. For her teaching and work bringing science to the general public\, she has received awards at the local\, state\, and national levels. SUMMARY:Natural Path Sanctuary (NPS) Presentation with Janis Strutt- End of Life Planning for Special Needs Families
DESCRIPTION:3/19/24 \nNatural Path Sanctuary (NPS) Presentation with Janis Strutt- End of Life Planning for Special Needs Families \nCome join us for a presentation with Janis Strutt from 10:30 – 11:30 followed by a question and answer session with the NPS Cemeterians from 11:30-Noon. A tour of the NPS is optional (dependent on weather). \nPlease meet in the lower level conference room at the Farley Center. \nJanie Strutt’s Presentation \nMy daughter\, Morgan\, was born with Spina Bifida\, and this led me to become passionate about working with children and adults with special needs. Specifically\, adults and children who require guardians or advocates to make health\, financial\, personal care\, housing\, and other big life decisions on their behalf. Tragically\, we recently experienced the unexpected loss of Morgan on October 15th. As devastating as this has been\, it has also served as a wake-up call for my family. We realized that we hadn’t adequately planned for the event of Morgan’s passing before our own. We were so focused on her death proceeding ours that we lost sight of her proceeding our death. We had put in place our trusts\, a special needs trust\, guardianship\, life insurance on us to leave to her future care and thought we had been so thorough. We missed so much planning like\, funeral expenses\, passwords\, time off work to grieve\, and so much more. \nThis experience has only fueled my dedication and provided more clarity to helping families plan\, particularly those with loved ones who require special considerations. I have forged partnerships with many business professionals and non-profit organizations to ensure that we take a holistic approach to protection and answers on where to find services. From our experience first-hand I know how important it is to plan as much in advance. Planning for now and the future with regards to a special-needs trust\, guardianship\, funeral expenses\, bank accounts\, life insurance\, housing\, care and everything in between\, I am committed to offering comprehensive guidance and support. There are countless facets to consider when it comes to safeguarding families\, and it takes a collaborative effort to navigate those complexities. I am here to advocate for those who need it most and provide peace of mind in the face of life’s uncertainties. \nJanis is an American Family Insurance agent with a passion for helping individuals and families who have children and adults with disabilities. \nPlease RSVP to programs@farleycenter.org \nwww.naturalpathsanctuary.org
