Bob Lindmeier, Chief Meteorologist for WKOW Channel 27 will come to the Farley Center for Peace, Justice and Sustainability on Saturday, May 4, 2024 to discuss our changing local climate, what to expect in the future, and a clear plan of action to minimize the risk to our economy and way of life. Bob, with support from WKOW, often mentions climate change during his broadcast and is a frequent public speaker on the topic.

Bob earned his B.S. Degree in Meteorology from the University of Wisconsin in Madison in 1979. He started his career in 1980 at Weather Central, a weather consulting firm based in Madison. While at Weather Central, Bob observed the debut of the first television graphics system based on an Apple personal computer. Over the years at Weather Central he would witness the rapid development of new generations of graphics systems that revolutionized the television broadcast industry.

Weather Central also provided broadcast services to WKOW-TV in Madison. Through the 1980s, Bob presented weathercasts in the mornings and weekends. He was awarded the American Meteorological Society Broadcast Seal of Approval in 1987, and then became the Chief Meteorologist at WKOW-TV in 1989, a position he has held ever since. Bob produces and presents the weathercasts on the 5, 6, and 10 PM newscasts, Monday through Friday.

Bob believes strongly in climate change education, and has given numerous presentations to school, civic, and faith-based groups. He is a member of Citizen’s Climate Lobby, a non-profit and non-partisan organization focused on national policies to address climate change. Bob is married and has three children and two grandchildren.

Set amidst 25 acres of woods and meadows on Farley Center land, the Natural Path Sanctuary is the first cemetery in Dane County, Wisconsin that exclusively follows natural and green burial practices. The nature preserve encompasses a diverse variety of habitats, including a pond and rocky ridges. We will explore the sanctuary on an early spring morning, looking and listening for birdlife. We will also be joined by staff who can share more about the history and management of this meditative place.

As a reminder, spring weather in Wisconsin can be inconsistent, so be sure to bundle up with layers and wear appropriate shoes for possibly icy, muddy, or wet conditions. Feel free to also bring a water bottle to stay hydrated, binoculars, and/or field guide. The field trip leader will share a checklist of all identified birds after the event.

The Natural Path Sanctuary promotes a legacy of care and respect for the earth through choosing a natural burial. We recognize that death is not always easy to accept, whether anticipated or unanticipated, and all involved with the Natural Path Sanctuary believe that there is healing in the practice of a natural-life sustaining burial.

The Natural Path Sanctuary is committed to family and community friendly burials with as minimal of an impact on the environment as possible. It is our desire to preserve the natural beauty of the land in life and in death.

Natural Path Sanctuary (NPS) Presentation with Janis Strutt- End of Life Planning for Special Needs Families

Come join us for a presentation with Janis Strutt from 10:30 – 11:30 followed by a question and answer session with the NPS Cemeterians from 11:30-Noon. A tour of the NPS is optional (dependent on weather).

Janie Strutt’s Presentation

My daughter, Morgan, was born with Spina Bifida, and this led me to become passionate about working with children and adults with special needs. Specifically, adults and children who require guardians or advocates to make health, financial, personal care, housing, and other big life decisions on their behalf. Tragically, we recently experienced the unexpected loss of Morgan on October 15th. As devastating as this has been, it has also served as a wake-up call for my family. We realized that we hadn’t adequately planned for the event of Morgan’s passing before our own. We were so focused on her death proceeding ours that we lost sight of her proceeding our death. We had put in place our trusts, a special needs trust, guardianship, life insurance on us to leave to her future care and thought we had been so thorough. We missed so much planning like, funeral expenses, passwords, time off work to grieve, and so much more.

This experience has only fueled my dedication and provided more clarity to helping families plan, particularly those with loved ones who require special considerations. I have forged partnerships with many business professionals and non-profit organizations to ensure that we take a holistic approach to protection and answers on where to find services. From our experience first-hand I know how important it is to plan as much in advance. Planning for now and the future with regards to a special-needs trust, guardianship, funeral expenses, bank accounts, life insurance, housing, care and everything in between, I am committed to offering comprehensive guidance and support. There are countless facets to consider when it comes to safeguarding families, and it takes a collaborative effort to navigate those complexities. I am here to advocate for those who need it most and provide peace of mind in the face of life’s uncertainties.

Natural Path Sanctuary (NPS) Winter Burial Workshop
How does the amazing NPS staff prepare for winter burials?

During the winter season, when the snow blankets the Sanctuary and the cold winds blow, how do we ensure a safe winter burial?

Come join us as we demonstrate the process during a mock winter burial by the NPS staff. We will show you how a body is shrouded*, transported to the burial site and lowered into the ground. We will talk about some of the challenges the weather poses and the measures taken to make a winter burial as smooth as possible to provide a peaceful resting place for your loved ones even during the coldest Wisconsin winters.

Please join Farley Center Farm Manager Seth Riley and Cemeterian Dustin Duve and other volunteers for a day working outside on the farm and in the Natural Path Sanctuary. Telephone and Data Systems (TDS) is the lead volunteer organization for the day.

There will be a variety of outdoor tasks so dress for the weather and bring work gloves and water bottles.

Meet at the Center at 12:55 a.m. at the Bur Oak Welcoming Area (BOWA) near the red packing shed.

SouthWest Wisconsin Area Progressives, (SWWAP) and 350 Wisconsin and the Farley Center invites you to a FREE screening of The Ants & The Grasshopper, a full-length documentary shedding light on an amazing woman’s quest to save the world.

Anita Chitaya has a gift; she can help bring abundant food from dead soil, she can make men fight for gender equality, and she can end child hunger in her village. Now, to save her home from extreme weather, she faces her greatest challenge: persuading Americans that climate change is real.

Traveling from Malawi to California to the White House, she meets climate skeptics and despairing farmers. Her journey takes her across all the divisions shaping the US, from the rural-urban divide, to schisms of race, class and gender, to the thinking that allows Americans to believe we live on a different planet from everyone else. It will take all her skill and experience to persuade us that we’re all in this together.

This documentary, ten years in the making, weaves together the most urgent themes of our times: climate change, gender and racial inequality, the gaps between the rich and the poor, and the ideas that groups around the world have generated in order to save the planet.
