Making a Planet-Friendly Farm Bill

The federal Farm Bill isn’t just vitally important to farmers, it impacts every American community—urban, suburban and rural. This massive legislation shapes national policies dealing with everything from nutrition and hunger to climate change and natural resource conservation. Hear how a new Farm Bill can be turned into a force promoting agricultural practices that are good for farmers, the land, air and water quality, consumers, and future prospects for life on our planet. Find out what you can do to influence what the next Farm Bill ends up looking like.

The Ants and the Grasshopper Mt. Horeb Screening

October 18, 2023

SouthWest Wisconsin Area Progressives, (SWWAP) and 350 Wisconsin and the Farley Center invites you to a FREE screening of The Ants & The Grasshopper, a full-length documentary shedding light on an amazing woman’s quest to save the world.

Anita Chitaya has a gift; she can help bring abundant food from dead soil, she can make men fight for gender equality, and she can end child hunger in her village. Now, to save her home from extreme weather, she faces her greatest challenge: persuading Americans that climate change is real.

Traveling from Malawi to California to the White House, she meets climate skeptics and despairing farmers. Her journey takes her across all the divisions shaping the US, from the rural-urban divide, to schisms of race, class and gender, to the thinking that allows Americans to believe we live on a different planet from everyone else. It will take all her skill and experience to persuade us that we’re all in this together.

This documentary, ten years in the making, weaves together the most urgent themes of our times: climate change, gender and racial inequality, the gaps between the rich and the poor, and the ideas that groups around the world have generated in order to save the planet.

WHAT: The Ants & The Grasshopper, followed by discussion and Q&A with members of the Agriculture Policy and Practices Team
WHEN: Wednesday, October 18, 2023, 7pm

Farley Center Book Discussion of Brave Crossing by Author Maria Alvarez Stroud

Maria Alvarez Stroud “BRAVE CROSSING” Book Discussion
2:00 – 3:30pm, July 10, 2022

Meet at B.O.W.A. – Bur Oak Welcoming Area at the Farley Center (outdoor event)
Please bring your own water bottle and feel free to bring snacks to share.
Join us for an in-person event with Maria Alvarez Stroud, author of BRAVE CROSSING – A Journey In-Between.

Based on her father’s journey from the Philippines in 1916, she’ll be sharing highlights of his journey, as well as insights gathered through research and then lead a discussion hedged around several questions: How welcoming is America to the immigrants who leave everything from their previous lives behind? And how different is it today, from 100 years ago?

About Maria:
This is Maria Alvarez Stroud’s debut novel, although throughout her varied career, writing was central to her work, which included national productions and community engagement campaigns within public broadcasting, statewide educational efforts, and leading a nationally acclaimed media organization.

About the book:
Described as “A wonderful immigrant story”, and “a book you don’t want to put down”, BRAVE CROSSING is “A true story reimagined in a deeply personal way, Brave Crossing is only one man’s journey from another time yet shines a light on every immigrant’s struggle toward the promise of America.”

The novel is a coming-of-age saga told through the eyes of Ricardo, a young Spanish- Filipino, as he voyages to America in 1916. He embarked on his journey thinking he was leaving behind war, rampant disease, unspeakable deaths, and family secrets only to find a country on the cusp of race riots, World War I, and a global pandemic. He learns that each of these each of these events has the power to define who he is and whom he may become.

Books can be purchased from http://littlecreekpress.com/bookstore/brave-crossinga-journey-in-between/ through Maria at https://www.mariaalvarezstroud.com/ or Mystery to Me Bookstore. Books will also be available for purchase at the event.

Please feel free to come early or stay late to take a walk around the Farley Center.

Gene Farley Sculpture Exhibit

Gene Farley Sculpture Exhibit
Opening Reception – Sat, Aug. 13,
1:00-2:30

Many of you who have been out to the Farley Center have noticed the many sculptures that are grace the land.

Gene Farley was a man of many talents. In addition to being the Chair of the UW Family Medicine, he was active in many progressive groups but he also enjoyed creating these large metal sculptures and drawing what he called doodles.

There are a total of 17 sculptures at the Center. There is another one in front of the Social Justice Center in Madison and another in Golden, CO.

We will kick off the Gene Farley Sculpture Exhibit on Sat, August 13 from 1:00-2:30 at the Farley Center. Please join us for light refreshments and take a map and take a self guided sculpture tour. This exhibit will be a permanent exhibit at the Center.

Linda Farley also was artistic and talented and enjoyed painting with watercolors. The watercolor is from a photo of Gene working on a sculpture. Linda named it “Sculpturer with Red Gloves.”

So, What’s a Hoot?

Websters defines *Hootenanny as “an informal gathering with folk music and sometimes dancing”. There will be plenty of that at the Farley Center on October 10.

A decade ago, at the beginning of the crackdown on protests at the Wisconsin Capitol, people gathered daily at noon to sing songs of solidarity. Now known as the Solidarity Singalong for nine years years, (the longest running protest of its kind in recorded history). Solidarity Singalong musicians who played instruments would gather to accompany the singers, calling themselves The Learning Curve, and many of them would stay after the scheduled sing, and play folk songs. Some were gospel, some were Americana, and all were fun to sing in harmony. Hoot N’ Annie continues to adopt new songs, new stylings and acquire new fans.

Hoot ‘n Annie is made up of 5 friends that play in several bands in and around Madison. Daithi “the fiddler” Wolfe on fiddle is in too many bands to mention them all, but you may know him from The Currach Irish Trio and Yid Vicious. Prentice Berge on guitar (Prentice is a Mt. Horeb native, graduating from Mount Horeb High School in 1981, before going on to St. Olaf College where he majored in music) and he also plays in County Hwy PD with Daithi, and often gigs with the Mad City Jug Band. Michael Bausch is on guitar and harmonica and also plays in the Wright Combination. Cindy Murphy is the multi-instrumentalist of the group, playing cello, mandolin, banjo and tenor guitar. Yes, her house looks like a magical music store full of rare and beautiful instruments. Our newest member, Tim ‘the librarian” Haub who has been playing with us regularly since 2014, officially became a member of Hoot ‘n Annie String Band in the summer of 2019.

*According to Pete Seeger he first heard the word hootenanny in Seattle, Washington in the late 1930s. It was used by Hugh DeLacy’s New Deal political club to describe their monthly music fund raisers. After some debate the club voted in hootenanny, which narrowly beat out wingding. Seeger, Woody Guthrie and other members of the Almanac Singers later used the word in New York City to describe their weekly rent parties, which featured many notable folksingers of the time. In a 1962 interview in Time, Joan Baez made the analogy that a hootenanny is to folk singing what a jam session is to jazz.

Farley Center-Racism in Healthcare by Dr. Tillman Farley-Online

Black Lives Matter: A discussion of racism in healthcare
ONLINE Presentation – (one hour presentation followed by 1/2 hour for discussion)
Racism has permeated all aspects of our society since 1619 when the first enslaved person was brought to these shores. Although the formal institution of slavery ended in the United States in 1865, the underlying force that allowed it to exist – the belief that one group of people is inferior to another – has persisted and has yet to be addressed in the United States. Sadly, the medical profession has not been immune to the effects of structural, institutional, and personal racism. Dr. Tillman Farley, MD, Chief Medical Officer at Salud Family Health Centers and Associate Professor of Family Medicine in the University of Colorado School of Medicine, will lead a presentation and discussion of racism in healthcare.
