Come join us for an in person concert with Wisconsin Folksinger, Storyteller and Educator Skip Jones at the Farley Center under the Bur Oak Welcoming Area (BOWA ).

About Skip Jones:
For over 40 years I have been sharing songs and stories with audiences of all types and sizes.

Some songs come from the giants of Americana music – giants such as Woody Guthrie. Others are from some of the great folk singers I have had the privilege of working with over the years, such as my old friend and mentor U. Utah Phillips, Guy Carawan, Bill Stanes and Larry Long. On occasion, I may also sneak in a few songs I have written myself.

The stories come from my travels around the world as a navy veteran and performer, and from my own back yard surrounded by members of the Mohican Nation in Northeast Wisconsin.

They also come from the lives and observations of thousands of “regular” yet very special people I have entertained, from ages 3 to 108.

I am a musical activist for many issues from clean water to respecting each other, and my convictions work their way into my music and stories.

Beyond my own performances I have organized and directed festivals and concert series, introduced House Concerts to the Midwest and beyond, provided high-quality sound engineering for folk festivals and cultural events, and have produced and recorded albums for local, regional and national artists.

Farley Center Tree Carving Tour with Artist David Carlson

Tree Carving Tour and information for wood carvers and other interested folks with Artist David Carlson. This will be a visit to the tree and a walkabout on the grounds for ideas.

Please send an e-mail to programs@farleycenter.org if you plan on attending.

Greetings Artists,

I have begun to receive seed catalogues, so we know spring is on its way. My thoughts return to the Farley Center Tree Carving project. This is one of many things that Covid-19 has put on hold. The good news is that we can begin to work towards resuming.

I would like to invite you to consider what you might want to contribute to the project. Remember that the theme is “Rooted in the Land.” This will also be the theme of the 2021 land art exhibition this year.

Simply contact me with what you would like to do. The tree is divided by vine carvings into “panels” of various sizes. You can select one of those to carve, paint, or attach objects that are environmentally friendly and that fit the theme. The challenge is to create with materials that are weather resistant.

I will, when things warm up this spring, be refreshing things and then I will be working on a carving on one of the panels modeled after the oak tree we so often gather around at the center. There are lots of other ideas related to the land, such as farming, bees and bee keeping, wildlife, birds, native flowers and much more.

I hope to hear from you soon.
David Carlson

CANCELLED – Farley Center Tour of Prairie Spirit Wildlife Sanctuary

Come join the Farley Center for a visit/tour to Prairie Spirit Wildlife Sanctuary in Springdale. Dr. John Barnes established this sanctuary in 2000 and serves as the Director of the Sanctuary. Dr. Barnes has been a long time Farley Center Board Member from the beginning of the Farley Center until August 2016. http://www.wildlifelandtrust.org/…/prairie-spirit…

PLEASE MEET PROMPTLY at 10:30 AM on Saturday, June 26 at the Prairie Sprit Wildlife Sanctuary located at 1811 Spring Rose Road.

Dr. Barnes will give a presentation/tour (PLEASE SOCIAL DISTANCE DURING THE OUTDOOR PRESENTATION) and then attendees may stay until 3:00 p.m. to walk about the sanctuary on their own.

“The Prairie Spirit Wildlife Sanctuary is 200 acres of land in Springdale, Wisconsin. The terrain is quite gentle and rolling, with good drainage and deep soils with few outcrops. Most of the property is formerly tilled land that has been restored to tall grass prairie, native to the area. The remaining land is central hardwood forest dominated by oaks and hickories. There also are a few planted softwood stands – spruce and red pine.”

“Three springs form ponds on the property and provide life-sustaining water year-round for the animals who call this place home. More than 130 bird species have been seen at the sanctuary, including chestnut-sided warbler, common yellowthroat, and grasshopper sparrow. White-tailed deer thrive here, along with many varieties of reptiles and amphibians.”

“The sanctuary was established in 2000 by the donation of a conservation easement by Dr. John Barnes. He worked with the Humane Society Wildlife Land Trust to ensure that his property would forever remain a safe haven for the wildlife who call it home. As with all land protected by HSWLT conservation easements, recreational and commercial hunting and trapping, as well as destructive logging practices, will always be prohibited.”
