Lunch & Learn Field Day

Join us at the Farley Center to see exciting agricultural conservation practices in action on the farm (and get free lunch featuring fresh local farm ingredients!) Participants will have the chance to tour farms at the Farley Center, see how farmers have integrated conservation practices into their operations, and learn about diverse agricultural conservation practices that are eligible for funding through the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) in Wisconsin. Farmer Juan Gonzalez Torres (Los Abuelos Farley Farm & Los Jalapenos CSA) will join us to share about his on-farm conservation practices.

NRCS staff will be there to meet participants and share about programs and funding available to small-scale, urban, and historically underserved producers. Go Farm Connect and Wisconsin Women in Conservation staff will talk about how they can support you in getting started on your conservation goals and applying for NRCS funding. Spanish interpretation will be provided, and we’ll talk about specific resources for Spanish-speaking growers.

We’ll provide lunch, snacks, and beverages onsite, according to dietary restrictions noted in the registration form you complete.

What to Bring & Wear
Come prepared for the weather (e.g., hat, sunglasses, sunscreen, water bottle, light jacket or rain jacket in case of sprinkles), as we will be outside and sometimes unshaded throughout the event. All interested parties are invited to attend and learn, including beginning and prospective growers, family, friends, and cultural and agricultural support professionals. Bring family and friends with farm dreams!

Navigating USDA programs can be overwhelming, confusing and intimidating. We get that! We’ve pulled together an experienced team of farmers to help you connect to the right programs. We offer FREE services that focus on different aspects of building a successful farm business. We can provide a Connector to be a personal guide, coach, and ally who shares your goal of running a successful farm operation.

Go Farm Connect is a farmer-led initiative to build relationships between historically underserved specialty crop farmers (beginning, women, veterans, BIPOC and new Americans) and federal farm agencies. Our Connectors are trained to help farms of all sizes and specialties in Minnesota and Wisconsin access agricultural assistance programs. The three-year project is led by Renewing The Countryside in partnership with the US Department of Agriculture, Farm Service Agency, and Natural Resources Conservation Service. Registration through this link is helpful so that USDA staff can be aware of what questions you might want answered. Go Farm Connect staff may take photos and videos at this event to promote programs and future events. Your RSVP gives your permission to be photographed. Climate Emergency Day in Wisconsin & July’s Building Unity Gathering

Save the date – Monday, July 22nd – Make history in Wisconsin as part of a global call for climate justice.

Building Unity, 350 Wisconsin and the Farley Center will be hosting a community potluck/each in as one of the many events happening around Wisconsin for Climate Emergency Day.

Bring a dish to share, blanket, chair for the community potluck/teach in. Buidling Unity will have various speakers at this event addressing the need to act for the climate emergency.

Check out all the events happening around Wisconsin for Climate Emergency Day. Wisconsin groups are coming Wisconsin’s State Capitol to demand that Wisconsin leaders act for the climate emergency.

Our day of climate action at or near the Capitol will include:

  • 5:39 – Sunrise gathering in Madison, WI on the shore of Lake Monona
  • A bus of supporters coming to State Capitol from Milwaukee
  • Noon: Rally at the State Capitol

  • 1:00 pm: Statewide virtual/in-person press conference at State Capitol (RSVP – com/CED-Press-Conf-RSVP)
  • 3:00 pm: Madison Bike Ride for Climate Action!

We will feature the Natural Path Sanctuary at the Farley Center Summer Market with a tour by Natural Path Sanctuary Board Chair Jeanne Meier from 4:00-5:00. Please meet a the kiosk a few minutes before 4:00.

So, come join us for a fun summer market at BOWA (Bur Oak Welcoming Area) at the Farley Center! We will have lots of vendors, food, music and a tour!

Reusable Beeswax Wrapper Workshop with Jeanne Meier

Join Natural Path Sanctuary Board Chair Jeanne Meier on April 27 from 1:00–4:00 p.m. at the Farley Center for a workshop on creating reusable beeswax wraps to sell at the Farley Center Summer Markets as a fundraiser for the bee program. These eco-friendly wraps will use beeswax from the Farley Center hives, promoting a plastic-free lifestyle. Don’t miss this sustainable and fun event! There is no cost to attend, but each participant must bring a hand towel, an iron, and a grater or vegetable peeler (for grating wax)./p>

Also people should bring cotton squares, preferably cut with pinking shears to 3 sizes: 9×9″; 11×11″; 13×13″. We will need a minimum of 50 sets of squares.

Farley Center has partnered once again with Palette Bar and Grill on a cocktail using  sustainably farmed honey from the Farley Center. Their Spring menu will once again feature the Farley Fly-By cocktail!

Join us on March 28th for a cocktail hour from 4-6pm where you will get to try our Farley Fly-by (you can also order without alcohol) and learn about the Farley Center, their beekeeping program, and sustainable practices.

Join us in giving back during this year’s event! With every purchase of Farley Fly-Bys, a portion of sales will go towards supporting Farley Center’s Beekeeping Program!

Making a Planet-Friendly Farm Bill

The federal Farm Bill isn’t just vitally important to farmers, it impacts every American community—urban, suburban and rural. This massive legislation shapes national policies dealing with everything from nutrition and hunger to climate change and natural resource conservation. Hear how a new Farm Bill can be turned into a force promoting agricultural practices that are good for farmers, the land, air and water quality, consumers, and future prospects for life on our planet. Find out what you can do to influence what the next Farm Bill ends up looking like.

SPEAKERS

Darin Von Ruden is a third-generation dairy farmer who is president of Wisconsin Farmers Union. Darin has been active with Farmers Union at the local, state and national levels and is a seven-time recipient of the Silver Star Award, National Farmers Union’s highest recognition of membership development. He and his wife JoAnn live in Westby and transitioned the farm to the fourth generation when their son Brett purchased the machinery and 50-cow dairy herd.

Margaret Krome has spent over 30 years developing federal and state programs and policies supporting sustainable agriculture. Margaret’s interest in agriculture dates back to her childhood, as the grandchild of a Florida avocado and citrus grower. She is policy program director at Michael Fields Agriculture Institute and previously worked for the Wisconsin Rural Development Center.

Mike McCabe is a member of a team promoting regenerative agriculture for the climate action group 350 Wisconsin. Mike got his start milking cows and working the land on his family’s farm before going on to lead the Wisconsin Democracy Campaign for nearly two decades and establish the grassroots group Blue Jean Nation. During a two-year stint in the Peace Corps, he served as an agriculture education adviser in the West African country of Mali.

Cemeterian Dustin Duve from Natural Path Sanctuary will discuss green burial options. Learn about the Natural Path Sanctuary, located in Verona, a nature preserve burial ground also known as a green cemetery. The first cemetery in Dane County that exclusively follows natural/green burial practices offering natural and traditional alternative to modern-day burials.
